This communication alert is being sent in response to several questions DHS/DMH has received recently related to the implementation of the Illinois Medicaid Comprehensive Assessment of Needs (IM+CANS.) Below is a message from HFS regarding the planned implementation of the lifespan version of this standardized tool for the documentation of assessment and treatment planning for individuals with mental health needs:
HFS has signaled its intention to utilize the IM+CANS as a core component of the Managed Care and fee-for-service delivery systems for all consumers enrolled in one of the full benefit programs administered by HFS requiring a mental health service. This commitment has not changed, though there seems to be some confusion regarding the statewide implementation date of the IM+CANS. The IM+CANS is not going live statewide on July 1, 2017. Moreover, the implementation of IM+CANS on a system-wide basis will be pre-empted by statewide notification, training, and certification of providers - so there is still time before this transition occurs. However, it is recommended that providers begin planning and considering at a leadership level what the implementation of the IM+CANS would look like at a provider level.
