U.S. Access Board Updates "Section 508" Information Technology Accessibility Standards

On January 9, 2017, the U.S. Access Board released the final rule updating the Section 508 (information technology) and Section 255 (telecommunications) accessibility standards. The rule updates and reorganizes both sets of standards, harmonizes them with the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, and applies them to websites, software, and electronic documents. The new standards take effect one year from publishing.

In accordance with the recommendations of the IITAA Standards Workgroup, Illinois will begin the process of harmonizing the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) standards with the updated Section 508 & 255 standards.
