03.03.14 - Emergency Bus Evacuation Procedures

EMERGENCY BUS EVACUATION PROCEDURES - (03.03.14/5-16)

Bus driver determines whether evacuation is indicated, and by which exit.

Driver puts bus in park, sets parking brakes, turns off engine, removes key, activates hazard lights. Never stop to collect items or make calls before evacuating the bus.

Front door evacuation

The driver jumps to the ground outside the door. Other bus aides unhook children, starting with those in back and guide them into the aisle and to the door. Then remove babies from car seats and pass them down. When all children are out, one Aide sweeps the bus. Bus Aides exit and take children far from the bus. Call 911. If there is no danger, the driver returns for 1st aid kit, or other items.

Back door evacuation

The driver moves to the back, opens the door and jumps out. Bus Aides, starting at the front, release children from seats and guide them into the aisle toward the door. If there are enough, one Bus Aide passes the children to the driver. If there are not enough, the Driver tells older children to jump into his arms and Bus Aides carry babies and pass them out. If there is time, one Aide sweeps the bus. When all the children are out, adults guide and carry children far from the bus. Call 911. If there is no danger, the driver can return to the bus for 1st aid kit or other items.

Window evacuation

The driver jumps from the bus and runs to a window farthest from the danger. Bus Aides release children from their seats, guide them to the window, and pass them out one by one, feet first if possible. One Aide sweeps bus. When all children are out, the Bus Aides climb out the window and adults take the children a safe distance from the bus. Call 911.
