Adolescent girls and boys age 10-18 and their parents/guardians in selected high need areas of the state.

Purpose

To reduce first-time teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, improve access to health services and increase the role of the schools and parents in addressing teen pregnancy prevention.

Services

Advisory Group/Coalition

  • This is a required component. Every agency must work with an advisory group/coalition that is addressing this issue of teen pregnancy prevention. The group must include youth and parents. The group meets on a quarterly basis and may be an existing coalition or a newly formed group.

Sexuality Education Component

  • This is a required component. The curriculum delivered must be based upon evidence-based principles and include a minimum of 4 sessions. Parent enhancement is required.

Positive Youth Development Component

  • This component is optional. Youth development programs seek to meet goals by helping youth to build a series of assets and skills that are necessary to successfully navigate adolescence and, eventually, adulthood.

Parent Education Component

  • This component is optional. Despite the benefits of strong parental engagement, families are not always equipped with the information, skills and parenting strategies need to effectively communicate and interact with their children in ways to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

Public Awareness Component

  • This component is optional. Public Awareness Campaigns are developed to address sexual behavior utilizing a purposeful promotional strategy to change knowledge, attitudes or behaviors in a specific, intended audience via marketing

Professional Development

  • This component is optional. Professional Development equips adults working with youth by building their knowledge and skills to effectively address topics related to the issue of teen pregnancy prevention. This component includes services such as "train the trainer" and in-service training for adults (e.g. teachers).

Delivery Method

Services are planned and provided by local health departments and other community-based agencies and are delivered in schools and community-based settings serving youth and/or parents.
