Volunteer Conference to be held May 13 & 14

Illinois Conference on Volunteer Administration (ICOVA)The Illinois Conference on Volunteer Administration (ICOVA) will be held at Dominican University's Palmer Hall in River Forest, Illinois on Thursday & Friday, May 13 and 14. Local and statewide organizations will set up displays in the atrium, while 24 breakout sessions will be held throughout the conference. Confirmed keynote speakers include former WGN-TV Chicago News Personality Merri Dee of Merri Dee Communications, and R. Dale Safrit, Ed.D., of North Carolina State University/University Extension and Editor, International Journal on Volunteer Administration. (photos included) The conference, organized by the Serve Illinois Commission, will also feature an update on Chicago's recent "City of Service" designation as part of a national movement funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Registrations will be accepted at the door beginning at 8:00 AM on Thursday, May 13 for $180.00 for the full conference, or $100.00 for a one-day registration. Conference fees include both a continental breakfast and networking lunch days, as well as the exhibit hall and all conference sessions. Additionally, an evening reception hosted by local volunteer management associations and underwritten by Nicor Gas is free to conference attendees. Continuing Education Units will be offered for a flat fee of $20 per person through Prairie State College; participants desiring CEU credits should notify conference staff at the registration table upon check-in to the conference.

"Learn, Serve, and Connect," the theme for this year's conference, demonstrates the event's goal of providing capacity-building training opportunities to enhance the knowledge and skills of volunteer leaders and managers in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The conference is also an excellent professional development opportunity for volunteers themselves.

The Serve Illinois Commission is a 25-member, bi-partisan board appointed by the Governor and administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). Its mission is to improve Illinois communities by enhancing traditional volunteer activities and supporting national service programs, including the Illinois AmeriCorps program.
