Developmental Therapist Vision Services (DTV)
An important part of the Early Intervention Team
A guide to understanding DTVs as part of the Early Intervention Team for families of children with vision loss
DTVs work with families of children with vision loss to provide information about:
- the visual system
- a child's specific visual diagnosis
- vision loss and its impact on development
- literacy and vision loss
- adaptive methods
- maximizing visual function
- local, state, and national resources and supports are available for children with vision loss
- transition into the education system at age three
DTVs are an important part of the Early Intervention Team who:
- process billing through the Early Intervention Central Billing Office
- are enrolled in the Illinois Early Intervention System under Developmental Therapy
- are college graduates with a four-year degree in Blind Education
- provide six-months and annual reports and attend Individual Family Service Plan meetings
- work closely with the team
- consult with all members of the team
DTVs can be added to a child's Early Intervention Team by:
- sharing your interests in Developmental Therapy Vision Services with the Child and Family Connections Service Coordinator
- developing strategies for Individual Family Service Plan outcomes consistent with DTV services
- contacting Hearing and Vision Early Intervention Outreach to identify a DTV in your local area
- completing service authorization paperwork (Service Coordinator)
- discussing service initiation with the family and team
