Developmental Therapist Hearing Services (DTH)

An important part of the Early Intervention Team

A guide to understanding DTHs as part of the Early Intervention Team for families of children with hearing loss

DTHs work with families of children with hearing loss to provide information about:

  • hearing loss and its impact on development
  • amplification and assistive listening devices
  • language acquisition
  • communication option approaches and philosophies
  • strategies to address developmental delays caused by hearing loss
  • local, state, and national supports are available for children with hearing loss
  • transitioning into the education system at age 3

DTHs are an important part of the Early Intervention Team who:

  • process billing through the Early Intervention Central Billing Office
  • are enrolled in the Illinois Early Intervention System under the Aural Rehab service descriptor
  • are college graduates with a four-year degree in Deaf Education
  • provide six-months and annual reports and attend Individual Family Service Plan meetings
  • work closely with the Audiologist, Speech Therapist, and Deaf Mentor
  • consult with all members of the team

DTHs can be added to a child's Early Intervention Team by:

  • sharing your interests in Developmental Therapy Hearing services with the Child and Family Connections Service Coordinator
  • developing strategies for the Individual Family Service Plan outcomes consistent with DTH services
  • contacting Hearing and Vision Early Intervention Outreach to identify a DTH in your local area
  • completing service authorization paperwork (Service Coordinator)
  • discussing service initiation with the family and team
