WORLD BRAILLE DAY - JANUARY 4, 2025
The Division would like to recognize World Braille Day on January 4, 2025. This date was chosen to commemorate Louis Braille's date of birth, the initial creator of this communication tool.
What is Braille?
Braille is an international communication tool primarily used by persons with visual impairments. The language of Braille contains combinations of raised dots that represent text, numbers, scientific symbols, mathematical signs, and musical symbols. Readers must use their fingertips to read the information written in Braille.
Who does this effect?
According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, around 2.2 billion people globally have a vision impairment, of whom at least 1 billion have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. Studies show that people with a vision impairment are more susceptible to poverty, neglect, and violence.
Why is this important?
World Braille Day is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people.
INTERMITTENT CILA AND HOUSING NAVIGATOR PRESENTATION JANUARY 9, 10-11 am
In July 2024, the Housing Navigator program transitioned from a pilot program to a permanent program within the Independent Service Coordinators (ISC). An increasing number of individuals are interested in moving into their own housing and want Intermittent Community Integrated Living Arrangement (ICILA) services to support them. Therefore, Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) is offering a webinar on the ICILA program and how it interfaces with Housing Navigation.
Description: DDD will be hosting a webinar targeted at providers who currently are ICILA providers or are considering expanding services to ICILA. Topics will include a brief overview of the ICILA program, roles and responsibilities, how providers interact with the Housing Navigators, what the provider's responsibilities are within the Housing Navigator program and lessons learned during the pilot program. There will be an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of individuals represented by DDD, the Housing Navigator program, and possibly others.
Date: January 9, 2025, 10 - 11 am
