Minutes

I. Welcome

II. Ground Rules and Expectations

  • Review of norms
  • Approval of September minutes: Motion to approve Michelle Clyne, second Monica Patrick. No opposed.

III. Mentoring

  • Review of mentorship comments from cross state research survey
  • Susan Connor from the Early Intervention Training Program shared historical information on a mentoring program pilot that EI Training offered more than 15 years ago. There were 10-12 mentors and 25-30 mentees. The program lasted 1 year and relied on existing funding. Pilot components included: application, mentor training, payment for mentors, identified areas of expertise for matching to mentee needs. Challenges included sustainability as program had no dedicated funding and length and breadth were not sufficient to determine its success or impact on practices.
  • Ashley Stoffel shared information from the IL OT Practice Act Rules for CE https://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/068/068013150001450R.html
  • Amy Santos shared information used in a higher ed environment related to mentorship that could be helpful as the workgroup thinks about the objectives of mentoring and the different types of mentoring, https://www.ncfdd.org/ncfddmentormap
  • Amy Santos shared Science of Mentoring information - it is often used in academia, but has many of the elements discussed by workgroup members https://cimerproject.org/entering-mentoring/ (requires a free account)
  • Rob Derry shared a PDF of a Reflective Supervision Model (developed by Wehman, Therese)
  • Discussion Topics:
  • Mentorship - Who? What How?
    1. Discussed defining mentorship and differentiating between mentorship and supervision
    2. Discussed the need for different types of mentorship

a. Technical (i.e. administrative functions, billing)

b. Practice mentor (i.e. quality practices, challenging dilemmas, reflective practice, etc.)

c. Systems mentor/guide (i.e. IMPACT)

3. Discussed critical components

a. Funding

b. Application

c. Training and ongoing mentor support

d. Optional for early interventionists (not required)

e. Provide CE credit for mentor and mentee

f. Payment for mentors' time (need to show system values it)

g. Agreements between mentor/mentee identifying objectives and anticipated outcomes, expectation setting

h. Available mentors for different expertise needs

i. Connection with university for planning objectives and evaluation (data collection, analysis, and outcomes)

  1. Discussed what currently exists in IL EI
  2. Questions for consideration and future discussion
    • Other topics included: using attuned and intentional program as a strategy for mentorship.
    • Identifying where gaps exist in what we already have and how we can build on that.
    • Consistency among the CFCs on how they do things would be important
    • Consider prioritizing certain populations over others to begin with (i.e. when do we tend to lose the most people?) so as not to get overwhelmed by attempting to mentor everyone; credentialing data shows the majority of folks are lost during the first 18 month "temporary" process
    • Who will take next steps with building a mentoring recommendation and plan? Could this be recommended to IICEI as an offshoot of this workgroup?
