At the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Division of Mental Health is distributing a training to our providers and other stakeholders.
This training shares effective practices numerous states have employed to support individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP), as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This includes information language access requirements, as well as areas such as identifying LEP populations, engaging with community-based organizations, translating written material, and providing quality assurance in language access services. The training also identifies and discusses areas of caution when providing access to individuals with LEP, such as use of machine translation tools, reliance on family members for interpretation, and other requirements.
Please reach out to your DMH program contact if you have any questions about language access in your DMH-funded services.
