Licensed organizations must comply with Part 2060, which requires that licensed treatment organizations use the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria.

The ASAM Criteria, 4th edition was released electronically on October 5, 2023. The publisher made physical copies available in December 2023.
Do providers need to start using The ASAM Criteria, 4th edition immediately?
No. Currently, the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) will continue to operate under The ASAM Criteria, 3rd edition.
When will organizations be expected to implement the 4th edition?
IDHS/SUPR does not have an anticipated date of adoption. We're reviewing new information and expect to provide guidance and training prior to implementation.
