Resources Sent to IDHS/SUPR Licensed Organizations: Seeking Safety and DSM-5 TR

The Illinois Department of Human Services/Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) is pleased to announce that one or more resources were sent to organizations licensed to provide substance use disorder treatment and recovery home services. Prevention First coordinated the distribution of these resources with program developers. Below you will find information about each resource sent in late June and July 2023.

"Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders", Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR)

All organizations licensed to provide SUD treatment services were sent the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). DSM-5 TR is the most comprehensive and current resource available to inform clinical practice. This publication includes fully revised text and references, updated diagnostic criteria and ICD-10-CM codes since DSM-5 was published in 2013. This edition also includes codes for suicidal behavior available to all clinicians of any discipline without the requirement of any other diagnosis.

Seeking Safety

All organizations licensed to provide SUD treatment and recovery home services were sent "Seeking Safety - A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse". If your organization provides services to adolescence and/or specifically focuses on women, your organization was sent additional resources: "A Women's Addiction Workbook" and/or "Seeking Safety for Adolescence Workbook".

Seeking Safety focuses on the following key principles:

  1. Safety as the overarching goal (helping clients attain safety in their relationships, thinking, behavior, and emotions).
  2. Integrated treatment (concurrently working on both trauma and substance use).
  3. A focus on ideals to counteract the loss of ideals in both trauma and substance use.
  4. Four content areas: cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and case management.
  5. Attention to clinician processes (clinicians' emotional responses, self-care, etc.).

To support the implementation of evidence-based practices that address trauma and SUDs, IDHS/SUPR is sponsoring Seeking Safety and DSM-5 in addition to other training offerings. IDHS-SUPR will be sharing more information about the fiscal year 2024 training offerings in a separate Smart Alert. Information about the training offerings will be posted on Prevention First's website at SUPR Treatment and Recovery Training.

Please note that your organization can implement Seeking Safety without formal training. To request additional training and/or technical assistance, please contact Fatina Hoskins at Fatina.Hoskins@illinois.gov
