988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Training Plan
- Course Title - Clinical Training: professional application of social work (psychological, counseling, etc.) methods to diagnose, treat, and prevent psychosocial dysfunction, disability, or impairment, including emotional, mental, and behavioral disorders (NASW - Barker, 2003)
- Special populations - 20+ specialty trainings by the Crisis Hub
- There are additional trainings received by 988 crisis operators by Vibrant
- Pooja Nagpal - Have all of these trainings already been created virtually? Or would the next cohort go through this, and we need to create them?
- Terry Solomon - There isn't a 'cohort'. We have had several trainings already, but some are still being developed. We can share our training calendar with this committee in the future if you like.
- Pooja - Is there an opportunity for us to see one of these virtual trainings?
- Terry - You can register for the trainings. We have not put the web-based trainings online yet, but we are in the process of uploading the content (PowerPoints) to the Crisis Hub website, but at this point we have not uploaded the videos.
- Michelle Churchy Mims - Is this an initial training? Is the expectation that this is when someone starts? Will there be boosters at an annual basis?
- Terry - These are ongoing trainings. In terms of a booster, we have not looked at that yet. We do not require a certain amount of training for each category, it's not mandated legislatively. We do provide specific subject matter trainings. We tailor our trainings based on feedback received after the trainings. We also offer CEUs and CPUs. The training we provide are to supplement the trainings provided in house as well as by Vibrant. We want to shore up skills that individuals have.
- Specific Mental Health Trainings: 8-10 trainings with specific categories and topics (Alternatives to Suicide, Ethical Issues and Suicide Prevention, etc.)
- Amanda Lake - SUPR and UIC have been coordinating on the substance use trainings, this should be available by next year. Think it would be good to coordinate about the core competencies around substance use for responders. As well as ensuring that we get people linked to appropriate resources. Sometimes this requires just a little bit of training and skill to get to the right resources.
- Terry: We can add another content area and it could be a general substance use category. If you could send me information about what you would like included, we can do that before we send this out to the committee.
- Pooja: Is there a visual chart of the workflow from start to finish when someone becomes a 988 call taker? I think it would help understand the timeline and what changes we would want to make when we understand the protocol and timeline.
- Tanya: I don't think that has been discussed at the moment. We are working on approving the training we want, and then determining timeline from there.
- Terry: We do not REQUIRE any training. There is no legislation that says they need 8 hours of training or anything. We can discuss if there is a certain amount of training hours call takers should have. We can discuss this with Lee Ann, DMH, and others, but we do not have that mandate with us today. Vibrant has required trainings.
- Pooja: It's helpful to understand that they have the Vibrant training, and then hopefully they will get this training.
