If you or someone you know is in need of support for mental health or substance use, we want to help. Below, we've provided a list of resources to explore. If you are experiencing immediate danger, please call 9-1-1.
Crisis Support:
- Call or Text 9-8-8 if you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide or facing a mental health or substance use crisis. You will be connected with a trained, compassionate crisis counselor. 988 is a confidential lifeline and services are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
- Call CARES (aka SASS) at 1-800-345-9049 if your child is experiencing a mental health crisis or you have concerns for their immediate safety, that they may harm themselves, or worry that they may require inpatient psychiatric treatment, please contact the CARES line to access mobile crisis response services. Services are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
- Call CCBYS (Comprehensive Community Based Youth Services) at 1-877-870-2663. CCBYS is a service for youth in crisis (e.g., runaways, lockouts, beyond control & in physical danger) as well as youth in high-risk situations.
- Crisis Text Line - Text the Crisis Text Line "HELLO" to 741741 and trained crisis counselors will respond and help you. The Crisis Text Line serves anyone in any type of crisis and is available 24 hours a day.
Navigating Your Options - Talk to a Person about Mental Health Support
- DHS Helpline - Call DHS's Helpline at 833-234-6343 (833-2-FIND-HELP) or text "HELP" to 833234.
- NAMI Illinois/Chicago - The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) can help you navigate services and connect you to the right place. You can reach the NAMI National Helpline at 800-950-6264, available Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
- For those who live outside of Chicago, NAMI Illinois can be reached at 800-346-4572.
- For those living in the Chicago area, NAMI Chicago can be reached at 833-626-4244 (833-NAMI-CHI). They are available Monday-Friday 9am-8pm and Saturday-Sunday 9am-5pm.
- SAMHSA - Call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (aka SAMHSA) at 800-622-4357 (800-622-HELP). SAMHSA is available 24/7 and provides free, confidential treatment referral and information.
Children and Youth Mental Health Support
- National Runaway Safeline - For youth at risk of running away or already have and are looking for help, call 800-786-2929 (800-RUN-AWAY) or text to 66008 for help 24/7.
- Safe2Help - For students seeking a safe, confidential way to share information that may prevent suicides, bullying, or threats to school safety, call 844-4-723345 (844-4-SAFEIL) or text "SAFE2" to 72332. This service is available 24/7 and has an app available to download as well.
- Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect - To report a suspect child abuse or neglect, call 800-252-2873 (800-25-ABUSE). You can also visit the DCFS Online Child Abuse Neglect Reporting page to complete a report online.
Substance Use Support
- Illinois Warm Line - Call the Illinois Warm Line at 866-359-7953 for mental health and/or substance use support. This is not a crisis hotline but a source of support during recovery. They are available Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm, except holidays.
- SAMHSA - Call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (aka SAMHSA) at 800-622-4357 (800-622-HELP). SAMHSA is available 24/7 and provides free, confidential treatment referral and information.
- Substance Use Support - Contact the Illinois Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances by calling 833-234-6343 or texting "HELP" to 833234 for support finding substance use treatment and recovery services 24/7, 365 days a year. This includes access to the Medication-Assisted Recovery program, MAR-NOW. Visit Substance Use Support About Us page for more information.
Gambling Support
Veterans
- Veteran's Crisis Line - Veterans, service members, and their families and friends can: call the Veteran's Crisis Line by dialing 9-8-8 then press 1, text to 838255, Veteran's Crisis chat online, or call the support for deaf and hard of hearing line at 800-799-4889 to reach caring, qualified responders within the Department of Veterans Affairs, many of whom are Veterans themselves. This support is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

- DHS Office Locator - Contact a health clinic with mental health resources near you using the DHS Office Locator or calling 800-843-6154.
- Medicaid Recipients - If you have Medicaid, you can call your Medicaid Managed Care Plan directly to find out which providers are covered.
- Private Insurance Recipients - If you have a private insurance company, contact them directly to access their provider directory.
- SPIDER - Locate service providers in Illinois using the Service Provider Identification & Exploration Resource (aka SPIDER) database.
Information About Medicaid and Other Benefits
