Seeking Safety

Overview of the model, how to implement it, demonstration of a session, role-play practice of a session by attendees, with video clips and experiential exercises. This training also includes attention to trauma- informed care.

Drug Impairment for Treatment Professionals

Course participants will be provided with an overview of the seven drug categories, commonly observed signs, and symptoms of impairment for each category, and medical conditions that could mimic impairment.

Handouts will be provided to the course participants for their reference.

Co-occurring Disorders Program Implementation Training

Mental health, substance use, and co-occurring disorder counseling and clinical staff; during portions of the training, we strongly encourage attendance from administrative and clinical leadership, intake/registration, and quality and compliance departments

The goal of the counselor implementation training is to help clinicians apply for the evidence-based programs in the Co-Occurring Disorders Program to deliver the best possible services to persons with co- occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

• use protocol-driven screening methods that consider each patient's symptoms, history, and motivation to change
• combine Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Cognitive- Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF) to engage, assist, and sustain change
• use CBT to address common psychiatric problems, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and others
• convey vital and current information on medication compliance, stigma, and other psychopharmacological issues
• understand program philosophy and clinical principles in the family program component of the CDP
• apply CDP to a variety of clinical situations

Medications in Treatment

One of the challenges of Medications in Treatment (MAT) is that clients and counselors often focus on the medication and lose the balance of full recovery. This M.D. level facilitated workshop will focus on how to use the evidence-based practices of motivational interviewing cognitive behavioral therapy, and the transtheoretical model of behavior change to broaden substance use disorder treatment beyond the "bio" (as in biopsychosocial) administration of the medication. It will help providers collaborate with clients to individualize substance use treatment and develop person-centered services that hold clients accountable and attract them to recovery.

2-day Motivational Interviewing and Individualized Service Planning with the ASAM Criteria

This application-focused workshop offers a practical approach to the ASAM Criteria and how it supports and drives individualized service planning. Participants will understand the relationship between the treatment plan and the use of The ASAM Criteria's admission, continued to stay, transfer, and discharge criteria. In addition, participants will learn how to write measurable, individualized treatment plans based on the individualized needs of the client and the dimensional analysis.

Behavior change principles will be discussed to enhance trainees' understanding of how and why people change and explore ways in which the client's stage of change impacts and drives a person-centered service plan. Participants' abilities to develop individualized service planning will be strengthened through core motivational interviewing skills to have better conversations about individualized needs and increase client readiness for and engagement in treatment.

*While there is no prerequisite for this training, participants are expected to have a solid foundation and understanding of the ASAM Criteria. 

3-day ASAM Criteria Implementation Leader

This training is learning about processes and models for assessing the field, the equipment and what needs to change to support the new model. As leaders in their communities and their programs, in addition to their clinical knowledge, Implementation Leaders are the "foot soldiers" for The ASAM Criteria implementation process.

Implementation Leaders develop awareness about thoughtful planning, communication and appropriate system change strategies to drive implementation and sustainability, as well as coaching and supervising others on the Criteria.

*Two-day ASAM Criteria Skill Building training is a prerequisite. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have completed Skill Building training to register.

A Leader's Guide to Implementing Co-Occurring Disorders Services

An integrated treatment approach helps people recover by offering both substance use and mental health services at the same time and in one setting, sometimes by the same providers. This session assists agency and clinical leadership, providers, and quality teams identify key program elements involved in providing services to address co-occurring disorders. Elements to evaluate and improve co-occurring capacity will be addressed with a focus on strategies to use by different roles within the organization. An overview of Hazelden's Co-occurring Disorders Program, which consists of five curricula and two additional resources, will be provided along with a framework for understanding how co-occurring capability may be impacted by the utilization of the curricula.

2-day ASAM Criteria: Skill Building

This two-day, application-focused training provides participants with an in-depth look at the theoretical foundations of the Criteria, including clinically driven services, biopsychosocial assessment, the six dimensions, continued to stay, and transfer/discharge criteria. Incorporating the use of the new edition of The ASAM Criteria book, participants have opportunities for skill practice at every stage of the treatment process: assessment, engagement, treatment planning, continuing care, and transfer or discharge.

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) for Substance Use Disorder Professionals

AMSR Training teaches clinicians and other healthcare professionals who conduct suicide risk assessments how to determine the level of suicide risk for an individual. Unlike other frameworks, the AMSR risk formulation is developed for everyone, taking into consideration their current circumstances. AMSR Training provides a structure for the clinical provider which can be used in the development of a collaborative treatment and safety plan. The training also provides a language for the clinician to use with non-clinical staff who are also involved in the care that the individual is receiving. AMSR Training offers the latest research-informed suicide risk assessment and risk formulation to be used in a variety of care settings.
