Strategies

Which of these strategies are most needed to interrupt and prevent firearm violence in your community (select up to 4 in each category):

  1. Direct Violence Prevention Funding:
    1. Youth Development
    2. Street Outreach
    3. Trauma Informed Mental or Behavioral Health Services- this seems pretty broad, maybe too broad. - Psychologic effects of isolation and fear.
    4. High Risk Youth Interventions - with mentorship
  2. Social Determinant Investments:
    1. Financial Stability and Mobility- as it relates to poverty, wage disparities.
    2. Addressing Racism and Historical Disinvestment in Communities of Color
    3. Childcare
    4. Family Violence Prevention
  3. Activities:
    1. Collaboration Between Community and Law Enforcement
    2. Events/Activities to Foster Community Cohesion- bring people together- less seclusion.
  4. Describe any other strategies needed:
    1. Stress, anxiety prevention- family prevention - addressing stress in the family.
      1. Loss of family due to COVID or other means.
      2. Address disproportionate impact of COVID,
    2. Figure out what is at the root of disinvestment, why are people leaving Aurora.
      • Housing affordability and displacement- cost of living increases compared to the wages of individuals.
  5. Need housing but density may not be the answer. Need to promote quality of life and build affordable housing all over. Need to provide parks and other activities. Park district to offer more free services to the community.
  6. Collaboration between community and law enforcement needs to address police trust. They see them when there are negative incidents rather than working towards prevention. Negative consequences reinforcing negative perceptions among youth. Meet with affected youth to understand their perceptions of police.
  7. Police community engagement is critical.
  8. Meet with youth generally.
