22-03 - Abbott Recall Guidance Update

Illinois WIC Vendor Notice 22-03

TO: Illinois WIC Vendors

FROM: Stephanie Bess, M.S., R.D., LDN

 Chief, Bureau of Family Nutrition

SUBJECT: FDA Public Health Advisory: Abbott Powdered Formula Recall - UPDATED

DATE: February 25, 2022

As we continue to evaluate and learn more about the recall of Alimentum, EleCare Infant and EleCare Junior powdered formulas that are on the IL WIC APL, we would like to provide the following update to the guidance we provided on 2/18/22 and share some information.

We understand that Abbott has sent out the attached document to wholesale distributors, and we are sharing it along with their specific retail return policy with you:

  • Retailers who order directly from Abbott: Please find attached the "Retail Product Return Instructions". Abbott has confirmed this communication went to all Retailers who order product directly from Abbott.
  • Retailers who order from a Distributor: These retailers should return product to their distributors, who will then collect product and return to Abbott. This will allow the accounts to be refunded by the distributor (which is their typical recall process).

At this time, if you do not have any alternate products in stock for customers to choose from, it would be preferred to refer them back to their local WIC office for benefit reissuance and to exchange the affected formula.

Please always refer families to their local WIC office if they have further questions.

We will continue to share updates as we are able, and post on the WIC website.
