Eligible pregnant women may continue to receive coverage for postpartum care. Postpartum care provides up to 12 months of coverage starting with the first day of the month following the month after the pregnancy ends.
Pregnancy ends with the birth of a child, miscarriage, or abortion. Disregard income changes for any reason from the start of coverage through the end of the postpartum period. The postpartum period also applies to an eligible woman who is not pregnant at application, but whose pregnancy ended:
- in the month of application, or
- in one of the 3 months before the month of application.
Note: Postpartum coverage is available through the Moms and Babies, All Kids Assist and AABD Programs.
A woman who is in a Family Assist case when her pregnancy ends is eligible for postpartum coverage.
The postpartum period starts the first day of the month after the pregnancy ends and continues through the last day of the calendar month in which the 12-month period ends.
The 12-month period provides the customer with coverage for postpartum care. Provide postpartum medical coverage to a woman when she:
- had a miscarriage or abortion, if she was receiving Medicaid based on her pregnancy at the time of the miscarriage or abortion; or
- signed an adoption agreement, if she was receiving Medicaid based on her pregnancy at the time the child was born. (In Illinois, an adoption agreement cannot be signed until at least 72 hours after the child's birth.)
