PM 06-07-01: Widow/Widower Benefits

The Social Security Administration provides widow/widower benefits to a widow or widower whose spouse, or former spouse, is deceased and who is:

• at least 50 and totally disabled. This person is considered an Early Widow/Widower. Their Social Security claim number suffix starts with a W.
• age 60 through 64. This person is considered an Aged Widow/Widower and does not have to be disabled. Their Social Security claim number suffix starts with a D.
