Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis: Overview, Efficacy, Implementation

This presentation will provide a treatment overview of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBT-p). We will review the components of this evidenced-based practice and discuss specific adaptations of CBT strategies for psychosis. The presentation will briefly review the efficacy of CBT-p compared to standard treatment. The presentation will also review important aspects of training and implementation including common challenges and benefits. We will provide examples of training approaches for providers in different practice settings (Illinois and Ohio). The presentation will conclude with a summary of recommendations and time for questions and discussion.

Harry J. Sivec, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working with individuals who experience severe and persistent mental illness. He currently works as the Senior Managing Consultant and Trainer for the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment (BeST) Center at the Northeast Ohio Medical University's Department of Psychiatry. He works with community agencies to implement a spectrum of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy services for psychosis (CBTp). Dr. Sivec completed advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) at the Cleveland Center for Cognitive Therapy and he is certified by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy as a qualified cognitive therapist. He received additional specialized training and supervision in CBTp through the Insight CBT Partnership in the United Kingdom. Dr. Sivec is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He is a founding member and Membership Secretary for the newly formed North America Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (NACBTp) Network. Dr. Sivec also serves as a consulting editor for the APA journal, Psychotherapy.

Valerie Kreider holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision from Kent State University. She is currently working at the Northeast Ohio University of Medicine in the BeST Center as a Sr. Consultant/Trainer where she consults with mental health agencies training prescribers, psychotherapists, case managers, and other support staff how to use CBT for psychosis (CBTp). She was previously a psychotherapist in her own private practice (Firebird Counseling, LLC) and with Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where she created and implemented partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient services. Dr. Kreider holds diplomat status with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Additionally, she has earned certification as a Gestalt Therapist through the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. She specializes in psychosis, dual diagnosis (substance use and mental health disorders), personality disorders, trauma, depression, anxiety, and group therapy. Dr. Kreider is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Northeast Ohio University.
