Trauma-Informed Care: Essential to Consumers and Providers

With approximately 90% of individuals in behavioral healthcare reporting exposure to at least one lifetime traumatic event, most agree that trauma-informed care should be standard and best practice. Despite this, the same attitude of trauma-sensitivity is often not extended to employees and providers working in the behavioral healthcare industry. This presentation will discuss the importance of creating a culture of trauma-sensitivity in the workplace and how implementing such practices can increase things such as employee satisfaction and productivity and decrease difficulties such as burnout and compassion fatigue. Participants will leave with practical implementation strategies.

Megan Ragan, BS, MSW (pending August 2021)
Megan Ragan is the Trauma Training and Care Coordinator for Centerstone's CT3 grant. Megan has accrued over 250 hours of training in the subject of childhood trauma, traumatic stress, and other related subjects. Megan has 10 years' experience in child-serving systems and will be graduating with her Masters of Social Work from Louisiana State University in August 2021. Megan is certified and experienced in multiple therapeutic modalities including Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Child Parent Psychotherapy, and Managing Adaptive Practices Therapy. Megan is a long-time Southern Illinois resident and when she isn't working with children and families, she can usually be found at home with her husband, chasing her three young children.
Kelsey Watterson, BA
Kelsey Watterson graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2017. During her time at Hanover College, Kelsey designed and analyzed multiple research projects with various scopes blending her psychology interest with her interest in physical health. Kelsey currently works at Centerstone's Research Institute as the lead evaluator for two SAMHSA child trauma grants, and previously as the lead evaluator for a fatherhood grant and an offender re-entry grant. During her time at Centerstone, she has presented at multiple conferences and poster sessions, including the 2019 NASW annual conference, the Indiana Attorney General's 10th Annual Drug Abuse Symposium, and the 2018 and 2019 American Evaluation Association annual conferences. In 2020, Kelsey published a co-written article titled "Predictors of Successful Housing in a Housing First Program" in the Journal of Social Distress and Homelessness. Kelsey is the mother of two and enjoys teaching her boys about hobby farming and the great outdoors.
