The 2020 Census Office report for November 2020 includes updates regarding: COVID-19, self-response rates, outreach, 2020 Census date change, grant allocations, and disbursements.
COVID-19: Please visit https://coronavirus.illinois.gov/s/ for the most current information.
Census Response Rate: As of October 21, 2020, the final Census numbers submitted by the U.S. Census Bureau stated that 99.9% of Illinois' households were counted in the 2020 Census. Illinois ranks seventh in the country for Census self-response rates and has remained in the top ten for much of the time, since March 12th, that the Census portal has been open. Out of the states with the largest populations, Illinois had the highest self-response rate. To find response rates and rankings by city, county, town, or Congressional districts, please visit:

Outreach: During the final weeks of the Census operation, to provide a final push and to highlight multiple hard-to-count areas and populations in order to help increase engagement and self-response rates, the Census Office, along with the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the IDHS Secretary, numerous elected officials (including members of the Census Advisory Panel), and all of our Census grantees and partners held additional press conferences, events, and questionnaire assistance and participated in radio and television interviews. Additionally, the last day of the Census coincided with the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month and the last stop of the Hispanic Heritage Bus Tour in the Chicago neighborhood, Back of the Yards, which was held jointly with the Illinois Latino Caucus.
2020 Census Date Change: Due to various lawsuits that advanced to the U.S. Supreme Court, the 2020 Census operation concluded on October 15, 2020 with mail-in questionnaires postmarked by October 15th and received by October 22nd included in the final count. The various date changes required the 2020 Census Office, Regional Intermediaries, and partners to be adaptive and flexible in continuing to reach people in hard-to-count and low response areas until the closing of the Census portal.
