Census Response Rate: As of August 31, 2020, Illinois ranked seventh in the country for Census self-response rates and has remained in the top ten for much of the time, since March 12th, that the census portal has been open. Outreach: With only 30 days remaining of the 2020 Census, the Census Office is highlighting multiple hard-to-count areas and populations to help increase engagement and self-response rates. The following questionnaire assistance events will be held:
- September 5th: Waukegan
- September 9-10th: Beardstown
- September 11-13th: Champaign/Urbana
- September 12th: Peoria
- September 15th: East St. Louis
FY 2020 Close out: The Census Office FY 2020 grantees submitted their final FY 2020 financial documents and the DHS fiscal team has closed out FY 2020. Given the public health circumstances, the Census Office had to work with Regional Intermediaries (RIs), community partners, stakeholders, and legislators to abruptly shift outreach strategies from in-person outreach and education to virtual, which resulted in unused FY 2020 Census grant funds. The chart below details the allocations and unused funds that will be returned to the State's general revenue fund:
