PM 01-02-03: Using Available Benefits

Clients must apply for and receive any other financial benefits that they may qualify for. They must apply for and receive these benefits as soon as they become aware that they might qualify. Examples of other types of benefits are Social Security (Retirement, Survivors, or Disability benefits), SSI, Unemployment Insurance, Workers' Compensation, etc. Exceptions: A client does not have to apply for SSI for a child who is eligible for TANF. A client does not have to apply for SSI to receive medical benefits.

A person must apply for other benefits, with the exception of Veterans Aid and Attendance benefits. A person receiving AABD does not have to apply for this type of VA benefit. The person should be encouraged to apply, but it is not required. See PM 09-03-01-e for how to treat this benefit.

Clients must use all potential resources available to them. This includes claiming the maximum number of allowable income tax exemptions and filing income tax returns.
