March 2020 Newsletter

The Illinois Department of Human Services/Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) has a great deal of information to share with you, our licensed treatment organizations and other interested stakeholders. Therefore, we are beginning a monthly newsletter! Each month we will be reviewing a variety of topics that have affected the division throughout the previous month. Topics may include staffing updates, federal and state funding opportunities, upcoming events, Smart Alert recaps, upcoming training and much more.

Funding Opportunities:

Gambling Disorder Services NOFO: This NOFO provides an opportunity for licensed treatment providers to apply for additional funding to deliver gambling disorder treatment services. Additionally, it provides community-based organizations that may not be licensed to provide outreach to populations and areas of the state most impacted by gambling. It is on a rolling submission deadline until April 1, 2020.


Division of Mental Health NOFOs: The Division of Mental Health released 3 NOFOs last month.

Applications are due on March 23rd by 5:00pm


Training Opportunities:

IDHS/SUPR is continuing to expand screening, assessment, treatment, case management, community intervention, and recovery support services for individuals with gambling disorders. For more information on upcoming trainings and webinars, please visit: https://weknowthefeeling.org/for-providers/.

IDHS/SUPR is sponsoring a series of trainings between March and June 2020 to enhance the skills, abilities, and knowledge of counselors, clinical supervisors and administrators providing and supervising substance use disorder treatment.

Community Forums:

Illinois wants to improve substance use disorder treatment for Medicaid recipients. There are eight upcoming community forums that will gather input on substance use disorder treatment capacity for Illinois Medicaid members.

OCR Updates:

As of February 12, 2020, 21,537 persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) have been served through these Opioid Crisis Response (OCR) Grants. Updated OCR accomplishments are summarized each month at: https://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=105980.

Let's Talk Cannabis Website:

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) announced the launch of a statewide public awareness campaign, including a website that provides go-to resources for health and safety information in regard to legal cannabis in Illinois. The website, LetsTalkCannabisIL.com, includes key information about legal and illegal cannabis use, along with potential health consequences of use. It provides health information for priority audiences, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, adults, parents and teenagers. Medication-Assisted Recovery

IDHS/SUPR will be using the term "medication-assisted recovery (MAR)" to reflect our support for the use of medications for successful recovery from OUD and AUD recovery services in Illinois, IDHS/SUPR has developed four new guidelines:

1. Harm Reduction for Opioid Use Disorder

2. Medication-Assisted Recovery (MAR)

3. Recovery Homes & MAR

4. Illinois ROSC Principles

As many of you know, Brian Pacwa has provided primary administrative support in the Director's office since November 2017 and his commitment to SUPR is truly appreciated. The Division would like to take this opportunity to announce that Brian accepted a new role as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff. Although the Chief of Staff has not yet been hired, this transition was made to ensure support was in place when he/she joins us. Congratulations to Brian as he embarks on this new opportunity!

The Director's administrative assistant is Leanna Altamore. Leanna joined IDHS/SUPR in August and has assumed primary responsibility for the Director's schedule, managing logistics, agendas and support documents, and many other important administrative responsibilities.
