Reset Your Own Illinois.gov Password

Did you know you can reset your own Illinois.gov password? You just need to set your Account Recovery Options -- but if you wait until you forget your password, it's too late, so do it now! Here's how:

Set your Account Recovery Options

You only have to do this part once. If you did it already, skip to Reset your Password.

  1. Go to the DoIT Identity Management portal at ID.Illinois.gov
  2. Click the Account Recovery Options link
  3. IMPORTANT: If you have a regular Illinois.gov account, set Domain to "Employees with Illinois.gov Accounts." If you have an External account, leave Domain set to "External User"
  4. Enter your Username (usually firstname.lastname) without "@Illinois.gov" and Password
  5. Click the Log On button
  6. At the Account Recovery Options screen, add a Recovery Email, Recovery Cell Phone, and/or Recovery Questions (You can do all three!)
  7. When you're done, click the Done button

Reset your Password

If you already set your Account Recovery Options, start here.

  1. Go to the DoIT Identity Management portal at ID.Illinois.gov
  2. Click the Reset your Password or Unlock your Account link
  3. IMPORTANT: If you have a regular Illinois.gov account, set Domain to "Employees with Illinois.gov Accounts." If you have an External account, leave Domain set to "External User"
  4. Enter your Username (usually firstname.lastname, without "@Illinois.gov") and the image code shown on the screen
  5. Click the Continue button
  6. Choose a Verification Option
  7. Do NOT check Unlock my account
  8. Click the Continue button
  9. Make up and enter a password* in the New Password and Confirm Password boxes
  10. Click the Submit button

* Passwords must be at least 8 characters, with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and digits or special characters. Passwords may NOT contain three or more consecutive letters from your name, and you cannot reuse a password you've recently used.

Help

If you forget your Illinois.gov password and did not set up your Account Recovery Options, you will need to call the DoIT Help Desk:

  1. Call (217) 524-3648, (312) 814-3648, or 1-866-277-5669 TTY
  2. Ask to "reset my Illinois.gov password"
  3. After the Help Desk gives you a temporary password, follow the steps above to set your Account Recovery Options and Reset your Own Password.
