HFS has the right to repayment when a client gets money for an injury. This is called HFS's charge upon a claim. HFS gets repaid for what it spent on clients who are or will get benefits for themselves or their family. HFS can use the charge on a claim to collect from most types of settlements, but it uses other means to get repaid from money paid by Workers' Compensation, the Workers' Occupational Disease Act, or the Wrongful Death Statute.
When HFS has a charge on a claim, the Bureau of Collections notifies the person involved in the injury by certified mail. They also let the client and their attorney know about the charge.
