2011 Substance Abuse Prevention Program

Illinois Department of Human Services
Division of Family & Community Services

Program Description

Target

Comprehensive Grant Program providers target youth 10-17 years old and their families, schools, peers, and community environments, as well as the general population.

Eligibility Criteria

School-aged youth.

Purpose

To reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use among youth.

Services

Comprehensive Grant Providers deliver an array of prevention strategies that have some evidence of being effective in addressing their local needs. These include but are not limited to: youth prevention education programs, parent education, mentoring, tutoring, communication campaigns, and technical assistance to a school to advance Student Assistance Programs or a coalition to address public policy to reduce alcohol and tobacco use.

Delivery Method

Providers are encouraged to use local data to identify the most salient ATOD prevention needs within their designated service area. Based on the information collected, evidence-based programs, practices, and policies are implemented and then evaluated for effectiveness. Providers can choose the settings in which they deliver their prevention strategies (after-school, during school, or within the community).
