ADA Legal Update from Government Officials

The Illinois ADA Project in collaboration with the DBTAC-Great Lake ADA Center and Equip for Equality invites you to attend a conference focused on the intricacies of the new ADA legislation and regulations. This low cost 1 day conference has two tracks and will feature State/federal experts.

Schedule

  • Individuals may register for individual sessions for Track I or for the whole day in Track II. Registration includes materials and refreshment breaks, but not lunch.

Track I

  • A.M. Session on Recent Title I Employment Regulations (9 AM - 12:00 PM)
    The morning session will feature Joyce Walker-Jones, Senior Attorney from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) who will focus on the definition of disability under the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and the EEOC's new implementing regulations. Ms Walker-Jones will provide additional guidance regarding the impact that these changes make on the reasonable accommodation process and an overview of recent EEOC ADA litigation.
  • *P.M. Session on Recent Title II and III Regulations Affecting Businesses and Government Services (1:30 PM - 4:30 PM)
    The afternoon session will feature Sally Conway, Deputy Chief, Disability Rights Section, U.S. Department of Justice, who will focus on the newly released regulations that are applicable to local and state governments as well as places of public accommodations. Participants will learn the new definition of service animal, required revisions in accessible seating and ticketing policies, the updated definition of wheelchair and powered mobility devices, modifications lodging facilities must make to their accessible room reservation process and the implications for using new technologies to ensure effective communication.

Track II - All Day Session on 2010 Architectural Standards

  • 2010 Architectural Standards (9 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM)
    This full-day session will feature Peggy Greenwell, Accessibility Specialist from the U.S. Access Board, Nicki Bazer, Disability Rights Bureau Chief, Illinois Attorney General's Office and Vickie Simpson, Policy Advisor Assistant, Illinois Attorney General's Office. Ms. Greenwell will discuss the 2010 ADA Standards issued by the U.S. Department of Justice that become effective March 15, 2012. These revisions impact all new construction and alterations made after that date. Bureau Chief Bazer and Ms. Simpson will focus on the relationship between federal standards and the Illinois Accessibility Code and Environmental Barriers Act.
