Project Endeavor
Illinois Department of Human Services' Office of Accessibility & Customer Support is teaming up with Communication Service for the Deaf to promote the free high-speed Internet and Notebook for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals.
Last year, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) awarded Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc a $14.9 million sustainable broadband two-year contract. As part of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. government made a public investment in the nation's deaf and hard of hearing community by choosing CSD for this award.
Dubbed "Project Endeavor" by CSD, its overall purpose is to address the barriers preventing deaf and hard of hearing individuals from accessing Internet-based services. The mechanism to achieve this goal is through equipment distribution and the provision of broadband services, connecting low-income deaf and hard of hearing individuals to both broadband and technical assistance. The project operates with an emphasis towards deaf and hard of hearing job seekers and also those transition students transitioning from "school to work" programs.
Project Endeavor helps bring Internet services to America's deaf and hard of hearing community. Some deaf and hard of hearing people can get high-speed Internet (also known as broadband or cable) for a low price or a notebook computer. Project Endeavor also has signed and captioned training videos and information that can help people learn how to use the Internet.
Benefits
People who qualify for a notebook computer can use it to:
- Search the Internet
- Watch videos
- Use remote interpreter or captioning services
- Look for a job
- Learn new skills
- Connect with others
