Subacute alcohol and drug abuse treatment must follow a plan approved by a physician and be provided by a qualified treatment professional. A psychiatrist enrolled in the medical program may provide diagnostic services. Services may be provided by any agency, including hospitals, licensed and certified by the Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) and enrolled in the medical program.

Clients may receive treatment at agencies that are licensed but are not in the medical program. These clients may have to pay a fee. If the client is in spenddown status, this fee can be used to meet the spenddown amount.
