WAG 25-04-02: Types of Social Security Beneficiaries and Claim Numbers

Definitions of Kinds of Beneficiaries

Primary beneficiary a person drawing benefits on the basis of their wage record. Entitlement is not related to another's wage record. This claimant is always coded with an A suffix.
Auxiliary beneficiary a person drawing benefits on the basis of the wage record of a living wage earner., e.g. wife, children. This claimant is coded with a B or C suffix.
Survivor beneficiary a person drawing benefits on the basis of the wage record of a deceased wage earner, e.g. widow, widower, children. This claimant is coded with a C, D, E, F, or W suffix.

A child's benefits may be paid from an auxiliary or survivor's claim, but usually cannot be distinguished as an auxiliary or survivor's payment by the claim symbol alone.
