International Overdose Awareness Day

The Illinois Department of Human Services/Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) is proud to announce its annual observation of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) on August 31st. This observance, through proclamation by Governor Pritzker, underscores Illinois' ongoing commitment to saving lives and honoring those who are overcoming substance use disorders and/or mental health challenges.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event, and Illinois joins the worldwide community in this critical endeavor. On August 31st, Illinois residents are encouraged to unite with over 13,000 IDHS staff members to raise awareness about overdose deaths and work to dismantle the stigma surrounding substance use.

Director Laura Garcia reflects on this important day: "SUPR is deeply committed to preventing overdose deaths and honoring people's many pathways of recovery. We grieve the many losses that have occurred due to this crisis. We honor the families of those loved ones by encouraging and supporting people in long-term recovery and spreading awareness about drug overdose prevention."

Join experts Dr. Leslie Wise from the Illinois Department of Public Health and IDHS/SUPR Director Laura Garcia as they provide vital insights into combating the public health crisis around the critical issues of overdose awareness, substance use, and harm reduction. In the latest episode of This Is Public Health, brought to you by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

In support of IOAD, IDHS/SUPR and its partners in substance use treatment, mental health services, and harm reduction will host a range of public awareness activities, including training sessions, speaking engagements, memorials, and online events.

These activities are vital for addressing and reducing the stigma associated with overdose deaths and for providing a platform for remembering those lost. This day serves as a significant reminder to support affected families and communities and to continue this support beyond IOAD. Visit International Overdose Awareness Day to find an event near you.
