Free Suicide Prevention Training

With funding from the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in partnership with ECHO-Chicago at the University of Chicago is offering the QPR Gatekeeper suicide prevention training.

Anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. It takes just three steps -

Question a person about suicide.

Persuade a suicidal person to get help.

Refer a suicidal person to the appropriate resources.

This training is a self-paced online training that takes about 1 hour to complete. Like CPR for cardiac arrest, QPR is a public health training to empower anyone with the skills to recognize and respond to an individual at risk of suicide. The Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (SUPR) encourages its grantees to take advantage of this free training and to promote it in communities served. The issues of suicide and substance use are interconnected, as both are often influenced by feelings of hopelessness, stigma, and disconnection. Suicide prevention response is a delicate matter, and counselors/therapists trained in clinical responses should follow their organization's policies as well as their training.
