Reimagine Public Safety Act: Local Advisory Council Meeting 2 Minutes

Meeting Overview

  • Awisi Bustos- Senior Policy Advisor, Office of the Secretary and Liaison to the Office of Firearm Violence Prevention Local Advisory Councils.
    • Awisi Bustos welcomed members and explained the overview of the meeting and shared the Office of Firearm Violence Prevention in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago will briefly walk you through the following:
      • An Icebreaker Activity
      • A Re-Cap of LAC and RPSA Activities
      • An Overview of Research Related Resources by the University of Illinois Chicago;
      • An Overview of LACs Moving Forward and Breakout Session Instructions

Welcome 

  • Assistant Secretary Christopher Patterson - Office of Firearm Violence Prevention, Illinois Department of Human Services welcomed all member to the group and briefly explained to the LAC Members their role in the Reimagine Public Safety Act.

Public Comments

  • There was one comment made:
    • What is the difference between the communities at the top and the bottom? Assistant Secretary Patterson shared they were rated by shootings in their area.  Rate/volume.
    • Are there big differences or are they the same socially/demographically? Assistant Secretary Patterson shared they will arrange municipalities by which one is leading the state in regards to shootings and homicide. Dana Kelly, Chief Policy Office added additional support to help review how to access that information on the website.

Ice Breaker Activity

  • Chris Patterson, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Firearm Violence Prevention explained the activity to the LAC members and read through the survey questions.
    • Who is in the room, Cub Fans, White Sox Fans or Cardinal Fans?
    • What is precipitating or causing violence in your community?
    • What brings you hope?

Recap of LAC Activities

  • Dana Kelly, Chief Policy Officer for the Illinois Department of Human Services recapped the LAC activities for the members.

Overview of Research Related Resources - UIC Presentation

  • Joe Hoereth, Director of the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement at the University of Illinois Chicago provided a brief overview of the resources developed by UIC and a presentation on the use of t community asset mapping tool.

Organization of LACs Moving Forward and Breakout Session Instructions

  • Dana Kelly, Chief Policy Officer for the Illinois Department of Human Services, shared the instructions for breakout sessions and guidance to begin the work on their summer recommendations.

  • Assistant Secretary Christopher Patterson - Office of Firearm Violence Prevention, Illinois Department of Human Services, reviewed next steps to the LAC members.
    • Please submit your final community recommendations to the OFVP by May 20.
    • If you have any information not currently provided that would be useful for further examination of your community, or have any additional questions or concerns, please submit them or any related feedback at any time to DHS.ViolencePreventionServices@illinois.gov.
    • We look forward to engaging with you during your ongoing meetings in the summer.
    • We will be in touch with updates that impact our LAC communities and ensure that you have all of the information you need to help prevent violence in your communities over the summer.
