Step 1. Envisioning a robust local firearms violence prevention infrastructure

  • Task - Establish a clarity of purpose for your team by coming to a consensus on a simple vision statement
  • Remember that you are taking a public health approach that is comprehensive, harnesses resources provided by IDHS and other agencies, and informed by data

Sample statements:

  • To generate a more comprehensive support system for young people at risk of gun violence in our community
  • To provide a better balance of services for those most at risk of firearms violence, specifically to increase and better coordinate resources available for families and mental health.
  • To better serve the mental health needs of youth and young adults in our community so as to reduce gun violence, by engaging them in direct intervention strategies connected to case management and a network of services.

Step 2. Asset Mapping

Task - Identify the range and capacity of services currently available in your community through a "scan" or inventory of those services

Remember the RPSA impact areas include the following services

  • Youth intervention
  • Youth development
  • Violence intervention
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Trauma support services for young people
  • "Re-entry" -- Addressing the needs of those returning to the community from correctional/juvenile facilities
  • Educational services/ job training/ skill-building

Task - Consider your vision, your asset map, and your available data to begin to identify resource needs and service gaps.

  • Please identify gaps in services in the community.
  • For the services that are provided - does the scale/capacity of the services meet the need?
  • Think about the services that are effective. Could those resources be replicated or benefit from additional support?
