Here at IDHS, we proudly celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans past and present who have inspired others to success.
The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week declared by President Lyndon Johnson, and it was expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Throughout this month, we will celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries, including Mexican Independence Day today, and will share history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latinx Americans.
All across Illinois, Hispanic and Latinx residents bring cultural richness and economic stability to local communities. They are serving as government officials, business owners, community leaders and activists, and improving the lives of those around them.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is an important time to recognize all of IDHS' Hispanic and Latinx staff. So many lead and have worked to make equity a priority, ensure that Hispanics are front and center in our efforts to improve the lives of the families we serve.
