The Motivational Interviewing Approach ***this session will not be recorded***

This 90-minute presentation will introduce participants to the methodology and spirit of motivational interviewing as a stand-alone evidence-based counseling approach for a plethora of behavioral health challenges. This training provides didactic material on the origins, applications and challenges of motivational interviewing as well as opportunities to practice basic skills in small groups. MI practice and skills will be presented within a larger context of person-centered, strengths-based service delivery and the importance of developing therapeutic rapport and collaboration with service recipients.

Melanie has worked in the field of mental health for 36 years and has provided training and consultation for the last 25 years. She was lead trainer/consultant at Thresholds, Chicago, Illinois, until her retirement in September 2020. Her focus has been primarily on clinical topics and practitioner skills. She has provided training for the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, Department of Corrections and Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. She has presented trainings for the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA), NAMI Illinois and Chicago, the Texas Behavioral Health Association and the Florida Council on Community Mental Health among other organizations. She has been a training consultant for Trilogy Chicago for the past 7 years. She has also presented a series of trainings for the Alliance for Recovery, a consortium of Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Facilities (SMHRFs) for the last 4 years. In 2014, she received the LeRoy Spaniol Educator of the Year Award from PRA.
