Volume XII, Issue XI - August 2018

Governor Rauner has issued a proclamation declaring September 2018 as Recovery Month in Illinois and has called upon the people of Illinois to observe this month with programs, activities and ceremonies to support recovery in Illinois. National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is an annual observance celebrated every September since 1989. In September, and throughout the year, Recovery Month spreads the message that:

  • Behavioral health is essential to health.
  • Treatment is effective.
  • People recover.
  • Prevention works.

This year's theme, Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose and Community, explores how integrated care, a strong community, sense of purpose, and leadership contributes to effective treatments that sustain the recovery of persons with mental and substance use disorders. The 2018 observance also aims to increase awareness and encourage audiences to take advantage of the increased dialogue around behavioral health needs and the increased emphasis on tackling our nation's opioid crisis.

Held on the last day of August each year, International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held just before Recovery Month begins to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had permanent injury because of a drug overdose.

To help more people achieve and sustain long-term recovery, the Illinois Department of Human Services, Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (IDHS/SUPR) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the State of Illinois invite all residents of Illinois to participate in International Overdose Awareness Day and National Recovery Month (Recovery Month).
