Volume XI, Issue XXI - February 2018

From: Maria Bruni, Acting Director
Division of Alcoholism and Substance

It is with some sadness that I announce that today, February 28, 2018 is my last day in the role of Acting Director of the IDHS, Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (DASA). I have thoroughly enjoyed serving in this role for the past two years, partnering with DASA providers in our joint efforts to impact the opioid epidemic, transition our Medicaid behavioral health services into managed care, and focus on building quality of care into our system of prevention, treatment and recovery support. While I am sad to step away from this role, I am also excited to fully begin my position as the Assistant Secretary of Human Services for Programs. In this role, I am responsible for supervising the implementation of policies and programs across all five IDHS divisions: Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Mental Health, Rehabilitation Services, Developmental Disabilities and Family and Community Services. I look forward to keeping you all updated on the critical work of these program divisions.

I am also pleased to announce that, beginning tomorrow, March 1, 2018, the new Director of DASA will be Danielle Kirby. Dani has been with DASA since 2003 and has served as a DASA Deputy Director since July 2016, responsible for the Bureau of Planning, Performance Assessment and Federal Projects. Dani has been responsible for the administration of numerous federally-funded treatment and infrastructure improvement grants, as well as the Illinois Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) Block Grant. Dani served as the Project Director for the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Project, which expanded SBIRT services within Illinois federally qualified health centers and other settings and promoted a dialogue to integrate substance use disorder services with primary care. She earned her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health and a Master of Education in Secondary Education from Northwestern University, and is a certified Project Management Professional.

Moving forward, please direct all DASA-related issues to Dani Kirby at Danielle.Kirby@Illinois.gov or 312-814-2300, or through her assistant Brian Pacwa at Brian.Pacwa@Illinois.gov.
