DOJ Announces NPRM on State & Local Government Website Accessibility

Helping Families. Supporting Communities. Empowering Individuals.

11/23/2015

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) regarding the accessibility of State and local government websites. The NRPM is scheduled to be released in January 2016, with a comment period through April 2016. DOJ has already indicated that it believes that Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires governments to ensure that their websites and web-based services are accessible. The NPRM will likely propose the specific technical standards that DOJ will apply when enforcing accessibility requirements. It is expected DOJ will continue to point to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 as their standard.
