As part of the discussion on updating the IITAA, the IITAA Standards Workgroup considered revising the categories used to group and arrange the Implementation Guidelines for Web-Based Information and Applications. The intent was to identify categories that would be clear and useful to web developers who are not necessarily accessibility experts.

Goals

  • Categories should be based on HTML rather than accessibility principles
  • Category names should use HTML terminology where possible
  • Categories should be ordered from simplest/most fundamental to most complex
(in the order in which a class on accessible web development might be taught).

Proposed Categories

  1. Content (alternative names: Structure, Semantics, Code, Text)
  2. Styles
  3. Images
  4. Links
  5. Tables
  6. Forms
  7. Scripts & Objects (alternate name: Widgets)
  8. Audio & Video (alternate names: Multimedia, Animation)
  9. Frames
  10. Order
  11. Sites (alternative name: Navigation)
