Purpose
Grand Challenges Explorations will support hundreds of innovative, early stage research projects - many pursuing ideas that have never before been tested and involving scientists from a wide range of disciplines and regions.
Each round of the Grand Challenges Explorations initiative will award grants against a set of specific topics. The topic areas for which proposals will be accepted in Round 2 are: new vaccines for diarrhea, HIV, malaria, pneumonia, and tuberculosis;
new tools to accelerate the eradication of malaria; latency in tuberculosis; new ways to prevent or cure HIV infection; new ways to protect against infectious disease; and new drugs and delivery systems to limit the emergence of resistance.

- Academic institutions
Funding Amount
Initial grants will be for $100,000 each. Projects showing success will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of $1 million or more.
