Teacher, Community Organizer, and "Citizen of the Year"
Kathy Johnson, a life skills instructor at the University of Illinois Extension Office, was the driving force behind the creation of a community center in Normal. Kathy, who has lupus, nearly died from complications of the disease several years ago and has limited range of motion. The DRS' Vocational Rehabilitation program helped Kathy complete her degree at Illinois State University. She's worked hard to overcome her disability and make a difference in her community. She coordinated the funding, community involvement and programming for Unity Center. "I love my job and the people I work with," Johnson says. She was named Normal "Citizen of the Year" for her efforts. But she isn't resting on her laurels. She has her sights set on establishing two more community centers in Normal.
