Point of Sale (POS) Terminals

Point of Sale (POS) terminals are usually found in retail stores, such as grocery stores.  Illinois Link cardholders may access SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamp) and cash benefits at a POS terminal.  There are no charges for withdrawals or inquiries at POS terminals.

How to use your Link card at a POS Terminal

  1. Tell the cashier which account to use - SNAP (Food Stamps) or cash.
  2. Either you or the cashier will slide your card through the terminal. If your card cannot be scanned, the cashier can manually type in your card number to continue your purchase.
  3. Enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) yourself. Do not tell the cashier your PIN!
  4. Check the amount that shows in the display window.
    • If the amount is correct, enter "OK" or "CORRECT"
    • If the amount is not correct, let the cashier know it is wrong.
  5. When your purchase is complete, the terminal prints a receipt that includes your purchase amount and the amount of benefits you have left in your account(s).

How to report a problem with a POS transaction

If you believe that you were improperly charged by a retailer at a POS terminal, the best option is to try to resolve the problem with the store manager.  If the manager is unable or unwilling to resolve the problem, report the problem either by going to the Illinois Link Card Website or by calling the Illinois Link Help Line at 1-800-678-LINK (5465).

When you report the problem, give the date, time and amount of the transaction, and describe the problem.
