The Department, through the Illinois Healthy Start Projects Partnership, has implemented a Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) project that includes five Healthy Start projects in the Chicago area. The purpose of FIMR project is to provide timely and relevant information regarding factors that contribute to fetal and infant deaths. The project is being supported with Healthy Start Prenatal Supplement funds. The University of Chicago Perinatal Center is leading the implementation of the project. The overall objectives of the FIMR programs are to:
- Examine the significant social, economic, cultural, safety and health systems factors that are associated with fetal and infant mortality through review of individual cases;
- Plan a series of interventions and policies that address these factors to improve the service systems and community resources;
- Participate in the implementation of community-based interventions and policies; and
- Assess the progress of the intervention.
