The Office of the Inspector General assists agencies and facilities in prevention efforts by investigating all reports of abuse, neglect and mistreatment in a timely manner, to foster humane, competent, respectful and caring treatment of persons
with mental and developmental disabilities.
OIG investigates allegations of abuse or neglect of individuals who receive mental health services or developmental disability services in programs that are operated, licensed,
certified or funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services, as well as allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults with disabilities (18 - 59 years old) who live in private homes. OIG also trains people who work with adults with
disabilities, conducts random checks to ensure that programs take corrective actions resulting from investigations, and makes site visits to state psychiatric hospitals and developmental centers to assist in preventing abuse and
neglect. For a fuller description of OIG's responsibilities, click here: Duties and Responsibilities of the DHS/OIG
