  1. (Worker) Do not count study hours in the 5 credit hours to meet the postsecondary work requirement. However, include both credit hours and study hours in the number of hours revised textassigned on the RSP.
  2. (Worker) Record on the RSP how the client meets the work requirement or why it does not apply. If it applies, check each revised textForm 4006 and/or Form 43CF to see that they continue to meet it. For paid work, be sure the work hours are shown with the correct earned income code in Item 90, even if the income is exempt.
  3. (Worker) If the client meets the postsecondary work requirement at the beginning of the semester and loses their job sometime during the semester, work with them to find another job. Allow them to finish the semester even if they are temporarily out of work. When the semester is over, if the work requirement applies and the client does not meet it, meet with the client and revise the RSP. Deleted text
  4. (Worker) While some clients in Postsecondary Education are not required to work, a client may voluntarily choose to work and go to school. In developing the RSP, discuss with the client the financial benefits of working while in college and the head start it gives them into the labor force. Use the desk guide as a tool to guide your discussion.
  5. (Worker) When the client chooses to work and go to school, consider the following factors to decide how many work hours are appropriate: the client's class-load, how much work there is outside the classroom, child care arrangements, the time the client would be able to spend with their children, etc.
  6. (Worker) A client who has chosen to work and go to school as part of the RSP may not quit or reduce their hours of either work or school without a good reason. If the client quits or reduces their work or school hours, discuss the reason with them. For example, a client may find that work is affecting their grades or their child needs more help with homework. If the reason is appropriate, revise the RSP to change the hours of work and/or school accordingly.

Example: A single teen parent with a 1 year-old child graduates from high school with honors. She has a scholarship to attend the local community college, majoring in computer science. She plans to transfer to a university after 2 years and obtain her bachelor's degree. She has made arrangements for child care and transportation. She plans to work during the summer and go to school full-time from September through May. She doesn't feel she can work during the school year and keep her grades up for her scholarship. Include Postsecondary Education in her RSP, with work during the summer only. Do not include a minimum work requirement during the school year for the first semester. If she has a 2.5 GPA after the first semester and keeps it up, she may continue in Postsecondary Education without a minimum work requirement during the school year.
