Copayments and any 25% cost share for Illinois Cares Rx can be used as medical expenses to meet spenddown. For the SNAP program, copayments and any 25% cost share are allowable medical expenses.

Medicare Enrollees

Persons with Medicare and Illinois Cares Rx pay the following copayments:

  • $5 for generic drugs;
  • $15 for preferred brand name drugs;
  • $20 for non-preferred brand name drugs;
  • $15 for specialty drugs; and
  • 25% of the cost of each prescription, plus co-payment, after the total cost of drugs for the year reaches $2,840 (Illinois Cares Rx payments plus co-pays).

Non-Medicare Enrollees

Persons without Medicare, enrolled in Illinois Cares Rx, pay the following copayments:

  • $5 for generic drugs;
  • $15 for preferred brand name drugs; and
  • 25% of the cost of each prescription, plus co-payment, after Illinois Cares Rx payments for the year reach $1,750.
