From: Danielle L. Kirby, Director
Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ADDICTION MEDICINE (ASAM) TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Director Danielle Kirby is pleased to announce that the Division has been given an extraordinary opportunity by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to receive free training on the ASAM criteria for treatment of addictive, substance-related and co-occurring conditions. This two-day training event will be offered multiple times and in statewide locations over the next few months so that one representative from each licensed treatment corporation can attend in person. SUPR staff recently attended this training and are excited that this opportunity can be shared with our licensed providers.

For over twenty years, ASAM criteria has been the foundation of regulated clinical requirements for substance use disorder treatment delivered by Illinois licensed organizations and yet there have been limited accessible and affordable ASAM training opportunities. The initiation of this training represents our commitment to ensure, going forward, that ASAM training is available to enhance the skill level of our existing workforce. There are also future plans to offer a "training of trainers" workshop to develop a cadre of trainers who can continue to deliver this type of training.

Please identify one person representing your corporation (not each licensed site) that is capable of sharing training information with your staff and/or who may be interested in a future "training of trainers" opportunity. Also note that space is limited for each event. The sooner you sign up, the more likely we can ensure you will be registered at your preferred location. As of close of business May 14th, registration will be closed and your space is no longer guaranteed. This will allow us to open registration to additional staff from larger corporations with multiple licensed sites and to our partner organizations, on a first come, first served basis.

All training materials are free to participants and there is no registration fee. You will be responsible for any associated travel costs. Please direct any questions to Stephanie Frank at 312-814-6401 or email her at Stephanie.Frank@illinois.gov.
